I was surprised to find an online critique basically giving praise to a graffiti art campaign in which said "artist" chose to use "buff marks" for fill ins for skull characters i will now dub "BuffSkulz". The praise (and decent photo documentation) seemed to be coming from one of the site's creators and administrators, a man who shall remain anonymous but i will refer to as "the Watchdog" in my attempt to recreate the story i see unfolding in our very own home city.
The Watchdog dreamt up a website to monitor issues around town and repair them. One of the main issues to be monitored, triangulated, and in some cases policed (as well as just being buffed) was graffiti. The Watchdog took much of this to a personal level, he sought out the writers himself, and when he got in over his head he brought in the law. The writers didn't like this and the anti got upped and it turns out that the buffers sucked at their job and started to make a bigger mess and spend alot of the city's money, and the police could only be bothered so much because we live in a city with an increasing crime and murder rate. The watcher began to take pictures to document said crimes; and somehow.... he began to embrace an artform he once felt compelled to "rat out" the creators of. A commentary emerged from the confused minds and from other artists alike who were trying to grasp this new revolutionary form of street art..... and now you can watch as this drama unfolds.

New Haven, although be it a small town, Has attracted and spawned many graffiti writers. Silencer was the first person to really turn me onto graffiti but now I know alot of the "Kings" and originators of style in this town. I've heard some awesome stories as well as those of a scene defeated and lost to the fears of being arrested. I think its also hard for some to draw the line (no pun intended) between their professional art careers, and private lives, and bombing or hitting illegal spots.
SketOne once told me that the cops started watching the Acme wall so he had to rethink bombing and piecing. From what i gather it was one of these old school writers uncles that had given permission to use the 9th square (parking lot next to cafe 9) wall to paint, bringing in kids from all over CT and most likely from out of state as well. Sket also told me that another writer had been caught at a spot known only as the "funkyard" and that they had siezed his blackbooks and computer as well as any pictures and other "evidence" he had in his house. I'm sure it was hard for everyone involved to make the call but Graff had to go underground in the 90's so writers could survive.
There were still a number of old murals and relics around town but it seems that new businesses (as is the case with Ctown painting over the FX Crew Mural!) as well as the younger generation of "writers" have all but wiped these works out. At this point theres probably only three or four spots that Remain intact along with a few hints of what used to be along the trainlines and scattered through various industrial areas. Its sad to think that it will all be lost.
Now many young kids start out tagging but become lost and just rep gangs. While painting a chill spot under the highway recently a group of probably 12 year olds, give or take came through with dollar cans "repping G.M.C." asking to paint over what i was still working on and a friend had just finished. its becoming territorial, its going to get like the munies in sf where "crews" just tag in broad daylight and intimidate with their numbers. I think its all because what was once embraced and community oriented is becoming commercialized and the outlaw nature is being glorified as it is in modern day "Rap music".
Some say Graffiti died, Hip Hop died, Peace died. I think its peoples wills that are dying, instead of viewing expression as just that its being judged on economic and social terms. and theres now a negative conotation towards the words graffiti, writer, tagger, etc. I've always believed that if society judges people by classes or in a certain light then thats what it gets in return- another generation saying "Fuck it! whats anyone ever done for me?" What i've seen while being out alone in the depths of the urban environment is the waste tossed out, old buildings being left to decay, people living in shantys and youth running lost in the streets.... and graffiti is responsible for none of this, its more of its own social commentary. heres some more pictures from a recent legal wall provided by Demo TSB BLT

I had a pleasant day. i woke up to the sun, and although it was 8:30 and i probably slept about 4 or 5 hours i decided that getting up before noon would be nice. i did some chores and ran some errands. i noticed the last of the old fashioned priority mail stickers at the post office while finally mailing in my ulock the key busted off in, funny how these things catch your eye. on the way out a new friend who frequents my job bumped into me and we chatted- i love making new friends through the coffee scene. i rode up north frontage(i think) towards downtown. stopped in at Alternate Universe to get my fix of trade paperbacks ( i would venture to say this is almost as expensive as being a lush used to be). rode over to Bineke to practice some tricks now that one of my new wheels is built up( thanks Justin from Amity Bikes!)... boy am i rusty. I tired quickly and gave into my hankering for Elaine's Healthy Choice, possibly the best vegan joint in new haven, where i talked with Richard who passed on some naturalistic advice for me to give my pops on keeping down his cholesterol. I ate my meal when i got home after narrowly avoiding a couple cars.. for my mind was clouded, and i'm a bit of a lucky disaster in traffic. the meal was good although I cannot say that i was as impressed by Slumdog Millionaire which i thought i'd give a chance for an afternoon movie break(maybe just not the right timing). oh well, gonna relax some more before i head to work. oh, since i wont be able to make it please check this out and feel free to let us all know how it is-

It was a good day....

Overall I'd have to say it was a good day in the elm city. I slept until around 2 o'clock. headed down to the SBC lot to meet up with the New Haven Scorchers, who had swept it out of the coating of winter sland and were mid game of bike polo, swapped up bikes and tried out some old tricks. We all rode over to Rudy's for ZARK's record convention which had an awesome turn out with three bands and many tables of records to peruse, had frites for my first meal of the day (unless you count french roast as a meal).... I realized that i had also had frites after work the night before, technically it was twice in the same day, i also realized i was hanging out with alot of the same people and that i enjoyed this part of living here. I love the comradare, it cheers me up to remember why i bust my ass and deal with the b.s. of living in CT. I'll be glad when spring comes- even moreso when summer hits, the students go home and the streets are ours. Its in the air.

Geronimo v. Obama

Yale University and a student society known as the Order of Skull & Bones were sued along with the U.S. government by the family of 19th century Apache Indian warrior Geronimo over his remains.
Descendants of Geronimo, who died in a prison at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, 100 years ago yesterday, filed suit in federal court in Washington, seeking the return of his remains from Fort Sill, Yale and “wherever else they may be found.”

In 1918 or 1919, a group of Yale University students including Skull & Bones member Prescott Bush, father of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush and grandfather of former President George W. Bush, may have opened the tomb in Fort Sill, removed Geronimo’s skull, some bones and related burial items and took them to Yale’s campus in New Haven, Connecticut, according to the complaint.

“To ensure that all existing remains of Geronimo and funerary objects are recovered by Geronimo’s lineal descendants, the Order of Skull & Bones at Yale University must account for any such articles that are or have been in their possession,” the descendants said in the court filing yesterday.

as for the ice sculptures i was semi excited to see around town and worried about taking away participants from our event...*maybe the warmest weekend all winter is not a great time to spend city money on ice art.

Honoring Community Heroes at Stetson

The Independent has a nice round-up about the Stetson Branch Library's plans to create a mural honoring community legends on the front of the building. Renowned artist Katro Storm along with Lou Cox of Channel 1 will be working with community youths to paint a mural which will pay homage to members of the Dixwell community who have had a positive impact on the neighborhood. These include former doctors, dentists, architects, educators and more.

You may recall that Cox and local artist Demo led a similar project on the wall behind Cafe Nine on Crown Street a few months ago (pictured below). Everything Katro does is impressive so we look forward to the result of this collaboration. They're also working with the City's Office of Cultural Affairs and a Yale University paintings-and-politics major, Mindy Lu. Stuff like this makes me smile!

What's Wrong With These Pictures?

A score of people showed up at the WEB substation yesterday to protest what they rightly deemed an attack on individual civil liberties. The protest was in response to the substation's posting of 25 community members' photos in the window of the building which sits at the corner of Whalley and Norton Streets in the heart of one of New Haven's most diverse neighborhoods.

You see, it may not have been illegal, but I don't think we need the law to tell us when something is unethical. It is common practice for substation leaders to post photos such as these within the walls of the building, but in this case, the commander decided to set aside precedent, (I'm sure with the best of intentions) and publicly display the photos in the sidewalk window of the substation.

The problem is not that the community substation had decided to thwart crime and thus improve the living conditions of WEB, but rather, that these individuals were not afforded the due process of the law. That is to say, few would argue with the goals of community policing-reducing crime, improving the quality of life, helping to sustain walkable neighborhoods, but one has to recall that no one should be considered guilty until proven innocent. Though, it may discomfort some, myself included (my friends were robbed within blocks of this substation), we still must remember that we are afforded very basic civil liberties in our society including the right to fair trial and presumed innocence. Therefore, it is unnecessary and unfriendly to publicly display the photos of individuals not wanted for any specific crime. Fear-mongering and profiling such as this will only create more tension in our communities.

We'll have to leave it to the ACLU lawyers to determine if anything about this incident could be considered illegal, but we should all agree that local law enforcement over-stepped their bounds on this occasion. In the meantime, lets give thanks to the community members who showed up in the cold weather yesterday to protest this incident. There message should resonate with anyone who values their community and their liberties.

If you live in this neighborhood, and care about the decisions being made on your behalf, the best thing to do is attend the Community Management Team meetings (3rd Tuesday of the Month @ 7:00pm at the substation). It is an open dialogue between community members and leaders including law enforcement. It represents a decentralized policy process and should be allowed to prosper. If you're sick of the same old guard deciding what's best for your neighborhood and you want to pitch your own ideas, this is a great place to start. In fact, invite all of your friends who live in the community with you, create a presence, show them that there are new ideas and solutions to our very old problems.

I caught myself saying over and over, a politician is just a politician until inauguration day rolled around and I found myself watching Obama be sworn in on multiple projection televisions (normally used for UFC viewing) while i was at an interview in a wings joint/sports bar/restaurant; all be it contrasting I was still taken by the event in the sense that I haven't watched an innauguration since Bill Clinton was sworn into office, I was riveted to the screen as were the patrons, and i have lacked hope in our country's government ever since Bush was allowed to spend 8 years further destroying our country's integrity. I still did not vote, and I still view politics as politics yet I am open minded to the concept of change as do i respect the democratic system as a model for governing a country.thats it for me, feel free to contribute, please.

My main concerns here are:

1)couldnt we be using funding for serious animal rights innitiatves, or to address more poignant events?

2)how would we adhere such changes in accepted lingo, mass brainwashing methods perhaps?

4)won't this confuse children; what if they eat their real kittens, release them into the ocean, or worse, try to walk their "seakittens"?

I'm a pretty strict vegan, I love kittens (as pets) and I am a firm believer of animal rights and anti-cruelty in general; however i just lost some respect for PETA.

Videos: Demonstrations against Bombing of Gaza

One Of our contributors started to post a video on protests against the siege on gaza but wasn't able to. I'm not sure which protest he had in mind.....

I left out videos of people who had been hit by bombs and lay dead or dying.....

Thats what's happening. When you wake up tomorrow think of how lucky you are that you will never have to face these horrors unless you so choose. we are still free. we are the opressors, not the opressed.

So, the city released it's crime stats for 2008.....

Turns out crime went up in certain important categories like murders. That's not the surprise though. We all know there is an obvious correlation between the state of the economy and the rate of crime. The shock came when Mayor Johnny D Goode told us not to worry because the recent surge in crime was a result of the release of scores of felons over the past year, and that they were only shooting each other. That's a relief.

Police Chief Luck Berry added, "the only difference between a shooting and a murder is how alive the victim is. In one the guy's dead, in the other he's still breathing. What we're trying to do is figure out how to keep 'em breathing."

Good and decent citizens of New Haven, I your dedicated and eternal mayor, John DeStefano, assure you that the crumbling streets of our fair city are safer than ever before (except if you are trying to cross them on foot). The increase in criminal activity over the past year has once again proven my point that when crime goes up in our city it is because of certain nefarious individuals committing bad deeds, and when crime goes down, it is because I did good stuff.

This past year crime has gone up, and it is not a result of my inability to do good stuff, rather, the criminal actions of others were so great as to overpower the good stuff I have done over the past 12 months as mayor.

Rest assured, that any gunfire you might hear is simply criminals shooting each other. To the best of our knowledge there is no credible evidence to suggest that criminals would ever target non-criminals. Thank you, and always remember, vote Destefano.

Graffiti versus Art?

Graffiti and Graffiti Art are both getting a lot of notice in town and in the Media in general. The upside is that these modern day hieroglyphics are becoming accepted more widely as a counter culture and art form. However there is a negative side to this as well, legal ramifications; the police are being pressured by city officials and property owners to start building cases on Writers, this is something that has been avoided since the early 90's (the cops had more important matters to attend to - still do for that matter).

What is happening now is that, much like the broken windows scenario in new york, business owners and residents of wealthy neighborhoods (as well as city officials) are all pushing to have graffiti artists and writers persecuted. I even read in the New Haven Independent that there would be 50 dollar fines doled out for possession(in public spaces) of graffiti devices such as stickers, markers and spray cans, as well as fines for offenses above and beyond those ordered in court. I talked to an officer recently and he knew of no such laws but said that in the 90s they had been tracking spray paint sales and had given fines for possession of large scale paint markers.

The thing that seems so contrasting in all of this is the fact that the typography in sign making and on fliers for clubs, and for other local businesses so often borrows from graffiti; as does modern art. if you search the new haven independent articles comments there is an individual who is a writer himself that states the obvious, that if we treated graffiti as they do in Montreal then business owners and property owners would seek out true artists in the scene and beautify their buildings with aerosol art eliminating the need for scarring the surfaces with buff marks and blotchy cover ups. Recently the Old Acme Wall was covered up with a mural done by high school students with the help of some local artists. My belief though, is that if you wish to stop something so anarchic by nature then it will inevitably get worse and spiral further out of control; yet if you were to provide local writers with legal walls and murals then at least street level surfaces would remain free of tags and throw ups.

As the case may be, so far there are still very lax laws having to do with dealing with writers, yet the mayor and the chief of police are taking notice and the cops are compiling profiles . Local watch dogs are filing reports, and the media is running stories. It may only be a matter of time before it becomes a real shit show.

Although I did not get a copy of the Comp. I was really surprised to see such a huge turnout for a post christmas weekend show at the 9 this past saturday. The West Rockers warmed....er...burned up the stage with an eclectic mix of reggae hardcore screamo metal influenced madness and the Black Noise Scam followed suit with their short but sweet oi-punk rock set with a couple out of town bands and DJ UB sandwhiched inbetween Cafe 9 ended up packed with a very diverse group of locals and visitors alike. good show guys.

Ted Leo is playing the space in Hamden Tuesday December 16th at a benefit show for manic mike (who passed away), i never formally met the late cofounder of manic productions but I'm sure his family could use the support and its awesome that such talent is being brought back to the area in his honor to celebrate who he was and what independent promoters stand for and strive for, to bring great acts to their communities. the space is located on treadwell ave. check out the artwork outside the back door on the ramp while you're there.

Let me start by saying....THANK YOU CARLOS WELLS. Welcome back to Re:New Haven, due to an overwhelming demand for the return of the zine but a lack of production incentive, as well as the realization that zines aren't green, we will continue on in the blog form thanks to the suggestion of a great contributor of ideas and support to the cause. I was very happy to get four issues printed and out there and regret to have had to stop. We will very possibly print an occasional issue, this all depends on you: the reader/contributor. Re:New is an open discussion and sharing of ideas from the perspective of the environmentally, socially, musically, artistically, conscious "townie" (New haven Local). Its an open forum to share ideas, comments here should be contributions to articles, feel free to email me with any article and multimedia content to go along with it. I will try to locate copies of past issues and post them to give new readers and contributors an idea of where we were or weren't headed???
